James Mill divided Indian history into three periods-Hindu,Muslim and British. But we cannot refer to any period of history as Hindu or Muslim because a variety of faiths existed simultaneously in these periods. We cannot characterise any age only through religion of the rulers of the time.

There were various problems with Nij cultivation:
The planters found it difficult to expand the area under nij cultivation.Indigo could be cultivated only on fertile lands, and these were already densely populated. They attempted to lease in the land around the indigo factory and evict the peasants from the area. But this always led to conflicts and tension.
A large plantation required a vast number of hands to operate. And labour was needed precisely at a time when peasants were usually busy with their rice cultivation.
Nij cultivation also required many ploughs and bullocks.Investing on purchase and maintaince of ploughs was big problem.
Hence planters were reluctant to expand the area under nij cultivation.

This solved a major problem that the company had earlier faced. Although its trade had expanded, it had to buy most of the goods in India with gold and silver imported from Britain. The overflow of gold from stopped after the assumption of DIwani. Now revenue from India could finance Company expenses. these revenues they used to purchase cotton and silk textiles in India, maintain Company troops and meet the cost of building the Company fort and offices at Calcutta.

The Indigo revolt was a peasant movement and subsequent uprising of indigo farmers against the indigo planters that arose in Bengal in 1859.Indigo planting in Bengal dated back to 1777. Louis Bonard was probably the first indigo planter. With expansion of British power in the Nawabate of Bengal, indigo planting became more and more commercially profitable due to the demand for blue dye in Europe.
