Under nij cultivation, the planter produced indigo in lands that the directly controlled. He either bought the land or rented it from other zamindars and produced indigo by directly employing hired labours: Nij cultivation had its drawbacks:
(a) The planters found it difficult to expand the area under nij cultivation. Indigo could be cultivated only on fertile lands these were already densely populated. Hence, the planters attempted to lease in the land around the indigo factory and evict the peasants from the area, but this always led to conflicts and tension.
(b) Labour force was not easily available. A large planation required a vast number of hands to operate. And labour was needed precisely at a time when peasants were usually busy with their rice cultivation.
(c) Nij cultivation on a large scale also required many plough and bullocks. Investing on purchase and maintenance of ploughs was a big problem. Nor could supplies be early go from the peasants since their ploughs and bullocks were busy on their rice fields, again exactly at the time that the indigo planters needed them. The planters were therefore reluctant cultivation till in the late 19th century.

The conflict between the Bengal nawabs and the East India Company started when the Nawabs refused to grant the Company concessions and demanded large tributes for the Company,s right to trade. The Nawabs also denied the Company any right to mint coins, and stopped it from extending its fortifications.
The Bengal Nawabs accused the Company of deceit, and claimed that the Company was depriving the Bengal government of huge amounts of revenue and undermining the authority of the Nawabs and disrespecting them.
The Company also had its grievances against the Nawabs. It felt that the demands of the Nawabs were unfair and that their trade could flourish only if the duties were removed. The company wanted to enlarge its fortification and build forts. All this led to conflicts between the Bengal Nawabs and the Company.

- The Mughal emperor in the year 1765, appointed the company as the Diwan of the provinces of Bengal.
- The Diwani allowed the company to use the vast revenue resources of Bengal.
- This solved a major problem that the company had earlier faced.
- The Diwani allowed the Company to use the vast revenue resources of Bengal. After the assumption of Diwani, gold was not imported from Britain and revenues from India were enough to finance Company expenses.
- The outflow of gold from Britain stopped after the assumption of Diwani.
- Now revenues from India could finance company expenses.
- These revenues were used to purchase cotton and silk textiles in India and to maintain Company troops and meet the cost of building the Company fort and offices at Calcutta.
