Official records don't tell what other people in the country felt, and what lay behind their actions.

Yogita Ingle 6 years, 4 months ago

Official records, although very detailed and easily available, do not help us in knowing what other people in the country, people who were not directly under the British rule, felt, and what reasons were behind their actions. To know that, unofficial records are used, which of course are more difficult to find as compared to the official records.

Here are some of the reasons why women are few in parliament:

1. Stereotypes: The belief that women are "supposed" to behave in a certain way while men also are "supposed" to behave in particular way. This has prevented most women from pursuing this.

2. In the past women did not have the right to stand as candidates in any elections. This has has a prolonged effect even in the contemporary society.

3. Social discrimination: The society itself doesn't support women who want to go against customs or religion. Like women speaking in public was considered a taboo in some societies

4. Gender inequality: Some societies don't fight for gender equality like educating women rather focus on education of boys. This has also affected the number of women who can pursue politics.

  • The British brought about several changes in the forest laws which severely affected the lives of many tribes. The British, for example, extended their control over all forests and declared that forests were state (government) property.
  • The British wanted timber, so the forests that produced it were classified as reserved forests where people were not allowed to move freely and practise jhum cultivation. As a result, several jhum cultivators moved away to other areas and lifestyles.
  • Colonial officials decided to give jhum cultivators small patches of land in the forests to cultivate, on the condition that they would have to provide labour to the Forest Department.
  • Naturally, many tribal groups revolted against the alien and unfair colonial forest laws.

The tribal people used to live an isolated life in the forests, but as the british enforced forest laws which mostly told that forests were private land , the tribals became homeless and had to work forcibly in the plantations of the british for meagre wages , so that they could earn a living.

The famous Battle of Plassey was fought on 23rd June, 1757 between the English under Robert Clive and the Nawab of Bengal. When the war begun, Mir Jafar and Rai Durllabh with their large armies stood a silent spectators, while a small force under Mir Madan and Mohanlal only fought against the English. Mir Madan fell fighting in the Battle Field while Mohanlal was forced to retreat. When all entreaties of the Nawas to Mir Jafar to come to action proved fruitless, he was unnerved and was forced to flee the battle field. Siraj was pursued and was captured four days later and was put to death at the order of Miran, son of Mir Jafar. Thus, the battle was over. The Battle of Plassey was infact, a mere Skimish, for the Engish only lost 29 men while the Nawab lost nearly 500.

Resource: Anything which has some utility for us is called a resource. Some resources have economic value, while some do not. For example; milk has economic value, but a beautiful landscape has no economic value. But both are important because both satisfy some human needs.

Time and technology are two important factors which can change a substance into resources. For example; petroleum was not a resource before people learnt to use it.

The Battle of Plassey was fought between the forces of the Nawab of Bengal Siraj-ud-Daulah and the English East India Company, led by Robert Clive. It was fought on 23 June 1757 at Plassey near Murshidabad. A major portion of the 50,000 strong army of the Nawab was controlled by Mir Jafar who was hand in gloves with the British. His men did not join the battle at a crucial time. As a result, the Nawab’s men suffered heavy casualties and he himself left the battlefield after the death of his commander Mir Madan.
The Battle of Plassey became famous as the first major victory for the British in Bengal because in this battle, the British had defeated the nawab of Bengal. This made the English the masters of Bengal. The revenues of Bengal not only helped them to organise their armies but also to finance wars with other Indian states.
