The life of shifting cultivators was directly connected to the forest.
When the British brought changes in forest laws, their life was badly affected. The British extended their control over all forests and declared that forests were state property. Some forests were classified as Reserved Forests for they produced timber which the British wanted. In these forests people were not allowed to move freely and practise jhum cultivations. Many were therefore forced to move to other areas in search of work and livelihood

  • Right to Equality: All persons are equal before the law. This means that all persons shall be equally protected by the laws of the country. It also states that no citizen can be discriminated against on the basis of their religion, caste or ***. Every person has access to all public places including playgrounds, hotels, shops etc. The State cannot discriminate against anyone in matters of employment. But there are exceptions to this that you will read about later in this book. The practice of untouchability has also been abolished.

  • Right against Exploitation: The Constitution prohibits trafficking, forced labour, and children working under 14 years of age.
  • Right to Freedom of Religion: Religious freedom is provided to all citizens. Every person has the right to practise, profess and propagate the religion of their choice.
  • Cultural and Educational Rights: The Constitution states that all minorities, religious or linguistic, can set up their own educational institutions in order to preserve and develop their own culture.
  • Right to Constitutional Remedies: This allows citizens to move the court if they believe that any of their Fundamental Rights have been violated by the State.

Archaeological sources include buildings, houses, pottery, seals , coins, monuments , writings and paintings on stones or walls , tools, jewellery, bones, leftovers, pieces of metals and other artefacts. Archaeological sources are important because they verify the history. It is important to be able to corroborate history with physical archaeological evidence. All archaeological data is valuable for the simple fact that it helps make history more tangible, and substantiates that history.

The Great Bath - a rectangular structure which resembled a swimming pool - was an important structure at Mohenjodaro. It was a large complex with six entrances, a central bathing pool, dressing rooms on all sides and an adjacent well. Steps lead to the bottom of the pool from two sides. Water from an adjacent well was used to fill the pool with fresh water, and an outlet in the corner was used to drain dirty water. It was made up of baked bricks and was made watertight with a layer of bitumen or natural tar. The Great Bath was perhaps used by important people on special occasions.

Adi Kumar 6 years, 3 months ago

Vision of golden age was a satyug when tribal groups would live a good life, construct embankments, tap natural springs, plant trees and orchards, practise cultivation to earn their living. They will not kill their brethren and relatives. They would live honestly. Birsa also wanted people to once again work on their land, settle down and cultivate their fields.

The shifting cultivators were forced to take up settled cultivation. But type of land and shortage of water meant they could not produce enough. Many of them had to move on to other areas in search of work when access to the forest was restricted. Under British rule, the functions and powers of the tribal chiefs changed considerably. They were allowed to keep their land titles over a cluster of villages and rent out lands, but they lost much of their administrative power and were forced to follow laws made by the British officials in India.

Because the britishers forced the peasents to grow only indigo. This decreased the soil fertility. A time came when they had no other option then to revolt. All the peasents got involved in the revolt. Thus, there was no one to cultivate indigo. Hence, the indigo production collapsed.

During the indrustrial revolution there was a great demand of indigo in britain. But, the climate was not favorable for it's cultivation. They went to many carabieen countries. But after some time they also did'nt met the expection. As a result they came back to india. In india they got indigo at a very cheap rate and sell in high cost in there own country. Thus, indigo plantation in India was a boon for the company.
