The Battle of Plassey was fought between the forces of the Nawab of Bengal Siraj-ud-Daulah and the English East India Company, led by Robert Clive. It was fought on 23 June 1757 at Plassey near Murshidabad. A major portion of the 50,000 strong army of the Nawab was controlled by Mir Jafar who was hand in gloves with the British. His men did not join the battle at a crucial time. As a result, the Nawab’s men suffered heavy casualties and he himself left the battlefield after the death of his commander Mir Madan. This was a major blow to the Nawab’s army which was, as a result, easily defeated by the British. Later, the Nawab himself was caught and killed, and Mir Jafar was instituted as the new Nawab of Bengal.

  • Under the ryoti system, Indigo cultivation was done by the ryots. The planters made the ryots to sign a contract or an agreement (satta). Sometimes, they pressurized the village headmen to sign the contract on behalf of the ryots. After signing the contract, the ryots got cash advances from the planters. But after taking the loan, the ryot was committed to grow indigo on at least 25% of his hand holding. Seeds and drills were provided by the planter. The cultivators prepared the soil, sowed the seed and looked after the crop.
  • But the planters bought indigo at low prices and hence the ryots were always in debt trap.

By 1850, at the apogee of its power, Britain had 1.8% of the world population. The area of the British Isles is only about 0.16% of the world landmass. Yet Britain then produced two-thirds of world output of coal and one half of world production of cotton textiles and iron. After 1770, iron (and later, steel), replaced wood as the material for making industrial machines and tools. ... As the Industrial Revolution began to speed up, the need for coal grew because it provided power for the factory engines, steam-powered ships and steam locomotives. Second, the demand for iron increased.

Blue rebellion was a peasant uprising of indigo farmers against indigo plantation. it started in march 1859 in bengal. thousands of farmers in bengal refused to grow indigo and attacked the indigo industries and refused to pay rent to indigo planters as the planters promoted the 'in demand in britain' indigo in lieu of food crops and mistreated the farmers to increase their profits. planters ceased their properties, demanded high interests on loans which left farmers indebted for life. thus the blue rebellion started in bengal. it is called blue rebellion because indigo is used to make blue dye which was in demand in europe.

The British introduced different land revenue systems in different parts of the country. For instance, Permanent Settlement was introduced in Bengal and Ryotwari system was mainly introduced in South India. The Mahalwari system of land revenue was introduced in the Central provinces, North West Frontier Provinces, Agra, Punjab and the Gangetic valley.
In all these land revenue systems, the revenue was fixed at a very high rate. In Permanent settlement, the Company fixed the revenue so high that it became difficult for zamindars to pay revenues to the Company.  The settlement was oppressive for villagers as they had to pay high rent to the zamindars. Their rights on the land were maintained till they paid the revenues. To pay the high land revenues, they had to take loans from moneylenders at high interest rates.Cultivators failed to pay the high rent and thus were evicted from their lands which they had been cultivating since generations. In other land revenue systems too, most of the peasants were not able to pay teh revenues and hence lost their lands.
