The British passed the Rowlatt Act in the year 1919. The Act curbed fundamental rights such as the freedom of expression and strengthened police powers. The Act was very repressive and therefore it enraged Indians. Prominent leaders of the freedom struggles such as Mahatma Gandhi, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, etc. felt that the government had no right to restrict the basic freedoms of people. They viewed the Act as devilish and tyrannical. Gandhiji decided to oppose this Act. He asked people of India to observe 6 April 1919 as a day of non-violent opposition to the Act, as a day of “humiliation and prayer’ and hartal. He organised Satyagraha Sabhas to launch the movement.

It was in the year 1739, Nadir Shar, the Shah of Iran and the founder of the Afsharid dynasty, invaded India. Before Nadir's invasion, India was not united as the states were fighting among each other. Nadir Shah took advantage of a weak Mughal Empire as the right opportunity to seize power and invade India. Nadir Shah advanced towards India in 1738. He captured the western frontiers of Mughal Empire such as Kabul, Ghazni, Lahore in 1739. The Mughal emperor, Muhammad Shah was defeated in the final battle and Delhi was captured by Nadir Shah and his forces.
However, as soon as Nadir Shah ascended the throne of Delhi, riots sparked off in the streets of Delhi in which a number of Persian soldiers were killed. THis enraged Nadir Shah and he ordered a general massacre of Delhi, which was also known as the infamous “Qatal-e-am”. During this massacre, the citizens of Delhi were looted and raided. Many locations of Delhi like Dariba Kalan, Fatehpuri, Chandni Chowk, Hauz Kazi, Faiz Bazar, Lahori, Johri Bazar, Ajmeri and Kabuli gates, were soon covered with corpses of both Hindus and Muslims.

Non cooperation movement was a mass movement which was launched by Gandhi in 1920. It was a peaceful and a non-violent protest against the British government in India.
Programmes of the Non Cooperation movement were:
- Indians were asked to relinquish their titles and resign from nominated seats in the local bodies as a mark of protest.
- People had to resign from their government jobs.
- People were asked to withdraw their children from government-controlled or aided schools and colleges.
- People had to boycott foreign goods and use only Indian-made goods.
The main aim of the Non Cooperation movement was the demand of 'Swaraj' or the self government.

Ships, trains, trucks, and autos are made largely of steel. Even the safety pins and the needles we use are made from steel.

After Aurangazeb Mughal empire started declining not a single Mughal king who sat on the throne of Delhi was able enough to rule such a big empire conquered by Aurangzeb. Sikhs & Marathas took an advantage of declining Mughal empire. Sikhs driven away Mughals from Punjab while Marathas who were ambitious were wanting to extend their empire over entire Indian subcontinent extended their empire from Maharashtra to Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, some kingdoms of Uttar Pradesh & also Delhi. A 1 person who is credited of extending Maratha empire is Bajirao, he conquered almost half of India & brought such a big subcontinent under Maratha dominion. He fought 41 battles & never was defeated. Other than Marathas other Hindu kings also freed their kingdoms like Maharaja Chhatrasal, Rana Durgadas also Nawabs of Awadh established their separate kingdom. Nizam established his kingdom in Hyderabad. Rajput kingdoms in Rajasthan were freed from Mughals. Most of the part of India came under Maratha dominion, Punjab came under Sikhs, Awadh came under the rule of Nawabs, Rajput rulers freed themselves from Mughal dominion & established their own independent kingdoms. Hyderabad came under the rule of Nizam who established himself as an independent ruler of Hyderabad, Marathas uprooted Delhi & Mughal emperors of Delhi became puppets of Marathas in the end of 1700 century thus Mughal empire ended within 80 year after the death of Aurangzeb.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a great social and religious reformer. He undertook several social reforms to change the society and worked to uplift the status of women in India. He started the Brahmo Samaj. The Brahmo Samaj believed in the worship of one God. Raja Ram Mohan Roy advocated Western learnings and Sciences.
He was against the caste system. He worked emphatically for improving the condition of women in the Indian society. It was largely due to his efforts that the practise of 'Sati' was made a crime punishable by law. He criticised the 'purdah system', polygamy, discouraged child marriages and advocated the rights of widows to remarry.
It was because of the efforts made by him to eradicate the social evils in the society, that Raja Ram Mohan Roy is known as 'Father of the Indian Renaissance'.

Despite laws that aim to create equality, the caste system in India continues to have a strong impact on society. ... The system has led to the upper castes being privileged over the lower castes, which were often repressed by those higher up on the caste scale. British colonial rulers would have self-imposed themselves as Brahmin during this evolution of the Caste system. ... This is due to the fact that caste is an ancient feature of Indian culture and therefore caste is an aspect of the content which would be generalised by the British as Hinduism. The government should take immediate steps to stop the scourge of caste system by (a) constituting fast track courts for giving immediate justice to the victims; (b) accelerating the “skill development” program so that the disprivileged community can acquire alternate skills; and, lastly (c) scrap the reservation
