When fuels are burnt, heat is produced. The amount of heat produced by different types of fuels on burning is expressed in terms of calorific value. Calorific value of a fuel may be defined as the amount of heat produced on complete burning of 1 gm of fuel. S.I. unit of calorific value of fuels is kilojoule per gram (KJ/g).
The higher the calorific value of a fuel, the higher its combustion rate is, which is important knowledge to know. A low calorific value indicates more water vapor absorption.

Coke:
(i) Coke is modified form of coal.
(ii) Coal obtained from the earth posses large amount of impurities like sulphure, volatile matters, ash, etc. when this impurities are removed, coal will large amount of fixed carbon. So, coke is the purest form of coal when large amount of carbon and this is obtained by heating the coal(bituminous) in absence of air.

A kaleidoscope is composed of a hollow tube. Three mirrors are placed in the form of a triangular tube and their reflecting surfaces face each other. One end of the tube is covered with a transparent sheet and another end is covered with an opaque sheet. There is an eyehole in the opaque sheet. Bits of glass are filled inside the tube. When a kaleidoscope is turned, we get to see various patterns in it. These patterns are formed because of multiple reflections.

1. In the extraction of metals: The electrolysis of the molten chlorides or oxides of reactive metals like sodium, calcium, magnesium and aluminum, gives the metal. For example, sodium metal is obtained by the electrolysis of molten sodium chloride. Similarly, aluminium is obtained by the electrolysis of molten aluminium oxide (A12O3). In each case, metal is deposited at the cathode.
2. Refining of metals: Metals like zinc, copper and aluminium are refined by the electrolysis of aqueous solution of a salt of the metal concerned.
3. Electroplating: One of the important uses of electrolysis is in electroplating. The process of depositing a thin layer of a superior metal over the surface of an inferior metal with the help of electric current is known as electroplating.

There are more than two ways of reducing friction: a.by polishing the surface(the another the surface the lesser is the friction) b.by oiling the surface(by oiling the surface the surface becomes smoother and also prevents the direct contact between the two surfaces by filling up the dents and forming a film over the surface) c.using ball bearings or roller bearings(if we use ball bearings then the sliding friction is converted to rolling friction and since rolling friction is less than sliding friction the frictiokn reduces) *rolling friction is less then sliding friction because the point of contact between the two surfaces is less and thus the interlocking between them also decrea see resulting in the decrease in the frictional force
