The practice in which different types of crops (leguminous and non-leguminous) are grown alternately in the same field or soil is called crop rotation. In crop rotation, the cereal crops like wheat, maize, paddy and millet are grown with leguminous crops like pulses, beans, peas, etc. in the same field. When a cereal crop is grown first, it takes away a lot of nitrogen from the soil and makes it deficient. Leguminous crops are grown to enrich the soil with nitrogen and thus increase the fertility of the soil.

Various abiotic factors associated with damage to food grains are:
1. Temperature: If food is stored at lower temperature, then enzymes, insects and the other micro-organisms, which spoil the food, become less active. The damage to the stored food is decreased.
2. Moisture: For safe storage of food grains, it is essential that the moisture in the food grains should not be more than 14% by weight.
3. Humidity: Growth of moulds and fungi in food grains takes place due to humidity of air.
4. Material of the container: Food grains should not be stored in lead container, because lead is a toxic metal.

Scattering seeds on the Earth after soil is prepared for cultivation is termed as Sowing. It is the most important part of agriculture. Plants can’t grow without seeds. The type of seeds sown decides the quality of crops that would come out of it.

SEED DRILL: A seed drill is a device that sows the seeds for crops by positioning them in the soil and burying them to a specific depth. This ensures that seeds will be distributed evenly. The seed drill sows the seeds at the proper seeding rate and depth, ensuring that the seeds are covered by soil. This saves them from being eaten by birds and animals, or being dried up due to exposure to sun.
