The linear equations in one variable is an equation which is expressed in the form of ax+b = 0, where a and b are two integers, and x is a variable and has only one solution. For example, 2x+3=8 is a linear equation having a single variable in it. Therefore, this equation has only one solution, which is x = 5/2. Linear means something related to a line. All the linear equations are used to construct a line. A non-linear equation is such which does not form a straight line. It looks like a curve in a graph and has a variable slope value.

Two quantities and are said to be in direct proportion
if they increase (decrease) together in such a manner that the ratio of their corresponding values remains constant.
That is if x/y=k= [is a positive number] = Constant

Two quantities and are said to be in inverse proportion

if an increase in causes a proportional decrease in (and vice-versa) in such a manner that the product of their corresponding values remains constant.
That is, if xy k= Constant

(x+2) ( x-2) + x (x+1)

= x ( x - 2) + 2 ( x- 2) + x (x) + x (1)

= x2 - 2x + 2x - 4 + x2 + 2

= x2 - 4 + x2 + 2

= 2x2 - 2
