The linear equations in one variable is an equation which is expressed in the form of ax+b = 0, where a and b are two integers, and x is a variable and has only one solution. For example, 2x+3=8 is a linear equation having a single variable in it. Therefore, this equation has only one solution, which is x = 5/2. Linear means something related to a line. All the linear equations are used to construct a line. A non-linear equation is such which does not form a straight line. It looks like a curve in a graph and has a variable slope value.

Two quantities x and y are said to be in direct proportion
if they increase (decrease) together in such a manner that the ratio of their corresponding values remains constant.
That is if x/y=k= [k is a positive number] = Constant
Two quantities x and y are said to be in inverse proportion
if an increase in x causes a proportional decrease in y (and vice-versa) in such a manner that the product of their corresponding values remains constant.
That is, if xy = k= Constant

(x+2) ( x-2) + x (x+1)
= x ( x - 2) + 2 ( x- 2) + x (x) + x (1)
= x2 - 2x + 2x - 4 + x2 + 2
= x2 - 4 + x2 + 2
= 2x2 - 2

(a+c)(-a+c)
= a (-a + c) + c ( a + c)
= a (-a) + a (c) + c (a) + c (c)
= -a2 + ac + ac + c2
= -a2 + 2ac + c2

The opposite, or additive inverse, of a number is the same distance from 0 on a number line as the original number, but on the other side of 0. Zero is its own additive inverse.
