The Mughals were the pioneers in building an empire for a long period of time, contradicting their predecessors who ruled only for short periods of time. They expanded their kingdom from the latter half of the sixteenth century from Agra and Delhi to almost all parts of the subcontinent in the seventeenth century. Their structures of administration and ideas of governance had a place even after their reign was over. In other words, they left a political legacy that even the succeeding leaders of the subcontinent could not ignore.

Weathering is the process of breaking down of rocks into smaller particles by the action of wind and water, change in temperature and penetrating roots of plants.
Weathering is of three types:
- Physical weathering: The breaking down of big rocks into smaller-sized rock particles with the help of agents like wind, water or change in temperature is called physical weathering. It is also called mechanical weathering.
- Chemical weathering: Chemical weathering changes the chemical nature of the soil. When rainwater mixes with gases like carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere, it forms acid rain. When acid rain falls on the surface of the earth, it makes the soil slightly acidic.
- Biological weathering: The roots of trees and burrowing of animals inside the soil bring about this type of weathering. Roots of trees and plants grow through the rocks, contributing to weathering. As the roots grow bigger, they penetrate deeper into the soil, forming cracks in rocks and helping soil formation.

It was during the seventh century that the kings acknowledged the big landlords as their subordinates or samantas. The samantas were expected to bring gifts and provide military support to their kings. In due course they gained power and wealth. They declared themselves to be maha-samantas, maha- mandaleshvar (the great lord of a circle or region) and so on. Rashtrakutas were one of them who were initially the subordinates of the Chalukyas in Deccan. In the mid-eighth century, Dantidurga, a Rashtrakuta chief, performed a ritual hiranya-garbha and overthrew the Chalukya overlord. After the ritual was over he was reborn as Kshatriya, even if he was not by birth.

The radiations from the sun enter the Earth’s atmosphere but are unable to escape. This increases the temperature of the Earth. This is called the greenhouse effect. Gases that cause the greenhouse effect are responsible for increasing the temperature of the Earth and thus contributing to the phenomenon called global warming.
