A minor chiefly family known as the Muttaraiyar held power in the Kaveri delta. They were subordinate to the Pallava kings of Kanchipuram. Vijayalaya, who belonged to the ancient chiefly family of the Cholas from Uraiyur, captured the delta from the Muttaraiyar in the middle of the ninth century. The successors of Vijayalaya conquered neighbouring regions and the kingdom grew in size and power. Rajaraja I and Rajendra I were the most powerful Chola leaders.

The term 'Hindustan' in the thirteenth century implied the areas of Punjab, Haryana and the lands between the Ganga and the Yamuna. Minhaj-i Siraj used the term in a political sense for lands consisting of a part of the dominions of the Delhi Sultanate. The areas included in this term shifted with the extent of the Sultanate. However, it never included south India.

Prashashtis are long poems which were composed in praise of kings.
They were composed by learned Brahmanas.
These Brahmanas were court poets who were appointed by the king himself.
These poems tell us how rulers wanted to show themselves as valiant, victorious warriors.
These poems contain details that may not be literally true.
The poems may not always be factually accurate since the poets are appointed by the king himself.
The reason as to why they are not authentic is because :
1.) The poets are appointed by the king himself thus they may be biased in giving the achievements and the traits of the king in the process of praising him.
2.) The details of of these poems may not be literally true.
