Electroplating: The process of coating a desired metal over the other metal is called Electroplating. The process uses an electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations to develop a lean coherent metal coating on the electrode. Electroplating is often applied in the electrical oxidation of anions on a solid substrate like the formation of silver chloride on a silver wire to form silver chloride electrodes. Example: Coating of zinc over an iron tin to prevent iron from corroding.

When iron is exposed to water or air over a period of time, the iron reacts with oxygen in the presence of moisture to form a reddish-brown chemical compound, iron oxide. This is referred to as rust. So chemically, rust is hydrated iron(III) oxide or Fe2O3.nH2O. The chemical equation for the same is given by:
4Fe(OH)2 + O2 + xH2O → 2Fe2O3.(x+4)H2O
Iron reacts very readily with oxygen. This is one of the reasons as to why it is rare to find pure iron in nature.

A substance which detects the acidic or basic nature of another substance by change in colour is called acid-base indicator. It is not advisable to taste any substance in laboratory because it can be harmful. Hence, acid-base indicators are used to check if a given substance is acid or base.
Natural Indicator: Indicators that are obtained from naturally occurring substance are called NATURAL INDICATORS. Example: litmus, turmeric, China rose, etc.

An electric bell consists of an iron core, on which is wound a wire as a coil. One end of the coil is connected to one terminal of a battery, and the other end to a steel rod that acts like a spring for the hammer touching the screw contact. The other terminal of the battery is connected to the screw contact with a switch in the middle.

Working of an electric bell
Electric current flows through the coil when the switch is ON, and the iron core acts as an electromagnet. The iron core attracts the hammer towards it. The hammer hits the bell and produces a sound. The circuit breaks at the screw contact when the hammer moves towards the iron core. At this point, the iron core ceases to be an electromagnet. The hammer is pulled back to its original position due to the spring action of the steel rod, and then touches the contact again to complete the circuit. The circuit is completed and current flows through the coil again, and the hammer strikes the bell again. The process repeats itself and you hear a ringing sound since the hammer keeps hitting the bell, until the switch is released.

Magnets were discovered by chance by an old shepherd named Magnes who lived in ancient Greece. Magnes used to take his herd of sheep and goats to a nearby mountain for grazing. He always took a wooden stick to manage his herd of sheep and goats which had an iron casing at its lower end. One day suddenly he felt that something was pulling his stick away from him. It appeared as if the stick was attracted by a rock and got stuck to it. He pulled hard to free the iron end of stick from the rock. This rock behaved like a magnet and was given the name ‘magnetite’.

Those green plants which obtain their food partly from insects are called insectivorous plants. These plants have specialized leaves to catch the insects. They are also called as carnivorous plants. For e.g. Pitcher plant, Sundew plant, venus fly-trap plant etc.
Those organisms which can make food themselves from simple substances like carbon dioxide and water by the process of photosynthesis are called autotrophs. All green plants are autotrophs. Example - money plant.

The process in which water passes down slowly through the soil is called percolation of water. The rate of percolation depends on the different type of soils. The percolation rate of water in a soil is the volume of water in millimeters which passes down the soil per minute. It is written in short form as mL/min. It is highest in sandy soil and lowest in clayey soil. The soil with low rate of percolation would be the most suitable for growing paddy.
The rate of percolation is measure by amount of water in mL divided by percolation time in mins.
