The aim of the experiment:

Demonstrate that oxygen is released during photosynthesis.

Material required:

Beaker, water, test tube, funnel, Hydrilla plant.

Procedure:

Take a beaker to fill it with water and put Hydrilla plant in the beaker. Cut the base of the plants, tie them with a thread and cover them with an inverted funnel in such a manner that the cut end of the plant is towards the neck of the funnel. Keep the whole apparatus in sunlight for some time and observe.

Observation:

It is observed that some bubbles are coming out continuously from the cut ends of the plant and bubbles are collected at the top of the test tube by displacing the water.

Results:

On testing, it is confirmed that the gas is oxygen. The liberated gas is evolved due to the breakdown of water in presence of water.

Digestion of food in human beings begins in the mouth. The mouth cavity contains teeth, tongue and salivary glands. The teeth cut the food into small pieces, chew and grind it. This is called physical digestion. Salivary glands produce saliva which mixes with the food. This involves chemical digestion of food. The saliva contains an enzyme called salivary amylase which digests the starch and converts it into maltose sugar. Mouth opens into a small funnel shaped area called pharynx which leads to a long tube called oesophagus. It carries the food down into the stomach. The wall of oesophagus is muscular. When the slightly digested food enters the food pipe, the walls of the oesophagus starts contraction and expansion movements called peristaltic movements which push the food into the stomach. Digestion does not take place in the oesophagus.
The glands present on the walls of the stomach secrete gastric juice that contains hydrochloric acid, the enzyme pepsin and mucus. A small amount of gastric lipase is also present that breaks down the fats present in the food. Gastric juice is acidic due to the presence of HCl which is necessary for the pepsin to become active and converts the proteins into peptones. The mucus protects the stomach walls from HCl. From the stomach, the partially digested food goes into the small intestine through sphincter muscle

Plants make food with the help of chlorophyll, as this is the only component that can absorb solar radiation. And without solar energy, photosynthesis as a process is not possible. Since, human body does not have this pigment called chlorophyll hence food cannot be made by humans as by plants.

Gaurav Seth 6 years, 6 months ago

Photosynthesis is the process by which autotrophs take in substances from the outside and convert them into stored forms of energy. The substances taken in are carbon dioxide and water which are converted into carbohydrates in presence of sunlight and chlorophyll. Carbohydrates are used for providing energy to the plants.

In order to obtain silk, mulberry trees are cultivated, silkworms are reared and their cocoons are collected to get silk fibres. The various steps involved are:

(i) Rearing of silkworms: A female silk moth lays hundreds of eggs at a time. The eggs are stored by the farmers at suitable temperature and humidity under hygienic conditions. When the eggs hatch, silkworms come out of the eggs. The silkworms are fed mulberry leaves. After 25-30 days, the silkworms stop eating and get ready to spin cocoons. The silkworms enclose themselves completely inside the silken cocoons in two or three days.

(ii) Processing of cocoons to obtain silk fibres: The pile of cocoons is placed in hot water. Hot water makes the silk fibres of cocoons to separate out. The long fibres are obtained by unwinding the threads from cocoons. This process is called reeling.

(iii) Converting silk fibres into silk cloth: Silk fibres obtained from cocoons are spun (twisted) to form silk threads called silk yarn. The silk yarn is then woven on looms into silk cloth by the weavers.

Animals and most other organism take in ready made food prepared by the plants they are called heterotrophs

Yogita Ingle 6 years, 6 months ago

The word Heterotrophic is the combination of two words i.e. Hetero + Trophos. Hetero means ‘others’ and ‘trophos’ means nourishment. If organisms depend on others for their food, such a mode of nutrition is called Hetetrophic Nutrition.

Animals cannot make their food themselves. They depend for food upon plants. Therefore, nutrition in animals is called Hetetrophic Nutrition. Animals are known as Heterotrophs.
