chemical change occurs as the result of a chemical reaction. During a chemical reaction, the atoms within a substance are rearranged into different combinations. For example, sugar undergoes a chemical change when it is cooked to make caramel. The heat from the cooking converts sugar molecules into different molecules that give caramel its color and flavor.

Amoeba takes in food using temporary finger-like extensions of the cell surface which fuse over the food particle forming a food-vacuole as shown in figure. Inside the food vacuole, complex substances are broken down into simpler ones which then diffuse into the cytoplasm. The remaining undigested material is moved to the surface of the cell and thrown out.

At sea-shore during the day cold air from the sea moves towards the beach because the land gets more heated than the sea water. Hot air above the land rises up, and cold air from the sea moves towards the land beach. This is called sea breeze as shown in Fig. (a).

During the night cold air from the land moves towards the sea because the land cools more quickly than the sea water. So hot air above the sea rises up and cold air from the land moves towards the sea. This is called land breeze as shown in Fig. (b).

There are two main parts in the respiration:

Aerobic and Anaerobic respiration:

  • The breakdown of glucose food occurs with the use of oxygen it is called aerobic respiration. The glucose food is completely broken down into carbon-dioxide and water with the use of oxygen and energy is released. All the living organisms like birds, lizards, snakes, earthworms, insects and most of the plants carry out this respiration.
  • The breakdown of glucose food occurs without the use of oxygen it is called anaerobic respiration. The microscopic organisms like yeast and certain bacteria obtain energy by anaerobic respiration. In the absence of oxygen, glucose breaks down into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Yeast is a single celled organism. It is used to make alcoholic drinks and bread. Yeast converts glucose into alcohol. This alcohol is used in making wine and beer. It also produces carbon dioxide gas which makes the bread rise. Anaerobic respiration produces much less energy because partial breakdown of glucose occurs in absence of oxygen.
