Leaves are vital to the survival of plants. They help plants in a variety of ways, including producing food and oxygen through photosynthesis, balancing water loss, regulating gas exchange, and transporting the products of photosynthesis.
A leaf has two main parts:
(1) Petiole- the stalk that supports a leaf in a plant and attaches the leaf blade to the stem.
(2) Lamina- the green flat part of a leaf that is specialized for photosynthesis. The lamina contains the following parts:
(i) Veins- the lines on the green flat part in a leaf that provide support for the leaf and transport both water and food.
(ii) Midrib- The central, thick, linear vein that runs along the length of a leaf is called midrib.

The hot water kills the leaf and the alcohol breaks down the chlorophyll, taking the green color out of the leaf. When you put iodine on the leaves, one of them will turn blue-black and the other will be a reddish-brown. Iodine is an indicator that turns blue-black in the presence of starch.

The main components of foods are carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins and minerals. These are called nutrients.
Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are also called energy giving food. It is the main sources of energy.
Protein: Protein helps in body growth and repairs the tissues so it is also called body building food. We get protein from milk, eggs, meat, fish and all kinds of pulse.
Fat: Fats are made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Butter, ghee, milk, egg-yolk, nuts and cooking oils are the major sources of fat in our food.
Vitamins: Vitamins are complex organic compounds which are essential for the growth and maintenance of our body. It does not provide energy.
Minerals: Minerals are required by our body in very small quantities. Iron, Iodine, calcium, phosphorus, sodium and potassium are common minerals.

In the absence of green plants, there would not be the process of photosynthesis. Besides oxygen which is essential for the survival of all living organisms is produced during photosynthesis. Thus, we can say that life would be impossible on the earth in the absence of photosynthesis.

Plants prepare their food by using raw materials like water, carbon dioxide and minerals.
The process of utilization of food by a living organism to obtain energy is called nutrition.
- Autotrophs or Autotrophic: - Plants that have chlorophyll trap the energy from the sun and prepare their own food. Such nutrition wherein the food is prepared by the organisms itself is called autotrophic nutrition. The organisms capable of preparing their own food are called autotrophs. All green plants are Autotrophs (Auto means self and trophos means nourishment). They prepare their own food by a process called photosynthesis.
- Heterotrophs or heterophobic: - Heterotrophic organisms are those who obtain food from other organisms. Since these organisms depend on other organisms for their food, they are called consumers. All animals and non-green plants like fungi come under this category.Organisms that follow the heterotrophic mode of nutrition are called heterotrophs.

Carbon monoxide poisoning is often called a "silent killer" because this gas is not detectable to any of the body’s senses. It’s odourless, colourless and tasteless. It’s released when fuel such as oil, propane, gasoline or even wood is burned in small engines, lanterns, fireplaces, stoves, grills, gas ranges, furnaces, cars, and trucks. When equipment that burns these fuels is properly ventilated, carbon monoxide poisoning is not a problem. But if the equipment or ventilation system is faulty, or if outdoor equipment is used in an enclosed area, toxic levels of this gas can build up quickly, creating the risk of poisoning. Concentrated carbon monoxide is poisonous and life-threatening to those who inhale it.
