(m + n)2 = m2 + 2mn + n2
(14)2 = m2 + 2(48) + n2
196 = m2 + 96 + n2
m2 + n2 = 196 - 96 = 100
(m-n)2 = m2 - 2mn + n2
(m - n)2 = 100 - 2(48)
(m - n)2 = 100 - 96
(m-n)2 = 4
m - n = 2

In algebra we are taught that the two rules for solving equations are the addition rule and the multiplication/division rule.
The addition rule for equations tells us that the same quantity can be added to both sides of an equation without changing the solution set of the equation.
The multiplication/division rule for equations tell us that every term on both sides of an equation can be multiplied or divided by the same term (except zero) without changing the solution set of the equation.

Given observations are 38 , 48 , x - 1 , 68 , 78 , 88

Number of observations ( n ) = 6 [ even ]

median = average ( n/2 , n/2 + 1 ) th terms

= Ave( 3rd , 4th ) terms

= ( x - 1 + 68 )/2

= ( x + 67 )/2 ---( 1 )

median = 58 -----( 2 ) given

from ( 1 ) & ( 2 ) we get ,

( x + 67 )/2 = 58

x + 67 = 116

x = 116 - 67

x = 49
