Substituting different values of the variable and checking the equality of LHS and RHS is the trial and error method. Let us solve the equation 3x + 5 = 17. We start to substitute different values of x. The value for which both the sides are balanced is the required solution.
| x | LHS = 3x + 5 | RHS = 17 |
| 1 | 3x + 5 = 3×1 + 5 = 8 | 17 |
| 2 | 3x + 5 = 3×2 + 5 =11 | 17 |
| 3 | 3x + 5 = 3×3 + 5 = 14 | 17 |
| 4 | 3x + 5 = 3×4 + 5 = 17 | 17 |
For x = 4, LHS = RHS. The required solution is x = 4.

Trial and error is a fundamental method of problem-solving. It is characterized by repeated, varied attempts which are continued until success, or until the practicer stops trying. According to W.H. Thorpe, the term was devised by C. Lloyd Morgan (1852–1936) after trying out similar phrases "trial and failure" and "trial and practice". Under Morgan's Canon, animal behaviour should be explained in the simplest possible way. Where behavior seems to imply higher mental processes, it might be explained by trial-and-error learning. An example is a skillful way in which his terrier Tony opened the garden gate, easily misunderstood as an insightful act by someone seeing the final behavior. Lloyd Morgan, however, had watched and recorded the series of approximations by which the dog had gradually learned the response, and could demonstrate that no insight was required to explain it.

Mean is an average of the given numbers: a calculated central value of a set of numbers. In simple words, it is the average.
For example, in a class there are 20 students and they have secured a percentage of: 88,82,88,85,84,80,81,82,83,85,84,74,75,76,89,90,89,80,82,83. Find the average of percentage obtained by the class.
Solution: Average = Total of percentage obtained by 20 students in class/Total number of students
Avg = [88+82+88+85+84+80+81+82+83+85+84+74+75+76+89+90+89+80+82+83]/20
Avg.=1660/20 = 83
Hence, the average of percentage got by each student in class is 83%.

wo angels are said to be complementary when their sum is 90°
Let one angle be x
then other will be (x -12°)
According to question.
x + (x - 12°) = 90° ( complementary angles)
=> 2x - 12°= 90°
=> 2x = 90° + 12°
=> 2x = 102°
=> x = 102°/2
=> x = 51°
and (x - 12°) = 51° - 12° = 39°
So, the angles are 39° and 51°
