There are many kinds of plains, and each is a bit different.

Grasslands

Grasslands are plains covered with grass. The Great Plains in the center of the United States are grassland plains. Grassland plains provide food for many animals, such as bison, and are also good for farming.

Grassland plains in Europe and Asia are often called steppes. Steppes get less rain, so trees don't grow there. In very hot areas that often have a rainy season as well as a dry season without rain, grasslands are called savannas. Savannas can be found in Africa, Australia, South America, and in the southern part of North America.

Coastal Plains

Plains that are found near the coast are called coastal plains. These plains are very flat near the coast where they meet the ocean, but they gradually become higher as they move inland. They may continue to rise until they meet areas of high ground, such as mountains. An example of a coastal plain is the Atlantic Coastal Plain on the east coast of the United States.

Flood Plains

You might be able to tell from their name that flood plains are flat areas around a river. When the water in the river rises, it overflows its banks onto these flat areas.

Trenches are long, narrow and very deep and, while most are in the Pacific Ocean, can be found around the world. The deepest trench in the world, the Mariana Trench located near the Mariana Islands, is 1,580 miles long and averages just 43 miles wide. Ocean trenches are found in every ocean basin on the planet, although the deepest ocean trenches ring the Pacific as part of the so-called “Ring of Fire” that also includes active volcanoes and earthquake zones. Ocean trenches are a result of tectonic activity, which describes the movement of the Earth's lithosphere.
