The rearing of silk worms for obtaining silk is called sericulture. The female silk moth lays hundreds of eggs on the mulberry leaves. The larvae that hatch out of the eggs are called silk worms or caterpillars. The caterpillars feed on mulberry leaves vigorously. When the silkworms are ready to enter the next stage of its development called pupa it stops feeding and its salivary glands secretes a fibre around the pupa to hold itself. The fibre is made up of protein called fibroin which hardens on exposure to air. Then it swings its head from side to side in the form of figure of eight forming a cover around pupa. This covering is known as cocoon. The further development of the pupa into moth continues inside the cocoon. The most common silk moth is the mulberry silk moth.

Materials are grouped together on the basis of similarities and differences in their properties. Materials are grouped together for convenience and to study their properties. Grouping materials saves our time, energy and makes our work easier. It helps us to find things easier than searching through a lot of stuff at once. This concept is used in data handling in mathematics. This all does not make any sense so in order to understand this easily and instead of wasting time and effort we group this data to understand it in a better way. Transparent objects allow light to pass through them. Examples of transparent objects are: Air, glass, pure water, some plastics etc. Materials like air, water, and clear glass are called transparent. Materials which have a shine are called as lustrous materials. Usually metals like gold, silver, copper etc. are lustrous.
