The production of dihydrogen in Coal gasification can be increased by reacting CO(g) present in syngas with steam in the presence of iron chromate catalyst.

With the removal of CO₂ the reaction shifts in the forward direction and thus the production of dihydrogen will be increased. This is called water-gas shift reaction. Carbon dioxide is removed by scrubbing with sodium arsenite solution
