Hand picking is the method of separating easily identifiable material from a mixture. This method is used only when unwanted material is in small quantity. Moreover, shape, size, or colour of the unwanted material is different from that of the useful materials. For example; pebbles, broken grains and insects are separated from rice, wheat and pulses; by handpicking.

All carbohydrates provide energy to our body. Fats provide twice as much energy as that provided by the same amount of carbohydrates. Fat is present in butter, ghee, oils, groundnut etc.

Natural fibers: The fibers which are obtained from plants and animals are called natural fibers. Natural fibres absorb more water. They are biodegradable. Examples: cotton, jute, silk, wool.
Plant Fibre: Cotton and jute are plant fibre.
Animal fibre: Silk and wool are animal fibre.

Add a few drops of iodine solution directly to the piece of bread. Then we observed that. The iodine turned from a red/ yellow colour to a blue-black colour. From this we conclude that If starch is present the iodine turns blue-black.

The main components of foods are carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins and minerals. These are called nutrients.
Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are also called energy giving food. It is the main sources of energy. It is made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
Protein: Protein helps in body growth and repairs the tissues so it is also called body building food.
Fat: Fats is used by the body for producing energy as and when required so fat is considered as energy bank in our body. Fats are essential for the absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K in the body. Fat in our body also prevents heat loss from the body surface.
