An earthworm does not have bones or legs. It has muscles which help to lengthen and shorten the body. An earthworm’s body consists of liquid-filled segments joined together. The earthworm’s body has two types of muscles circular and longitudinal muscles. During movement, the earthworm first extends the front part of the body, keeping the rear portion fixed to the ground. Then it fixes the front end and releases the rear end. Such repeated muscle expansions and contractions, the earthworm can move through soil. The tiny bristles on the underside of earthworm’s body help in gripping the ground when a part of its body moves.
