Dr. Beaumont was a surgeon in US army. He treated the person named Alexis St. Martin who was accidently shot in the stomach that injured his ribs and stomach. After treatment there remained hole in his stomach that never filled.
Dr. Beaumont then did various experiments by using stomach of St. Martin to study the digestion in stomach. During his experiments, he used to insert food tied to string in the stomach through the hole and then study how well food was digested. He also extracted hydrocholoric acid from his stomach. He used this acid to digest bits of food in cups. This lead to the discovery that not only crushing of food by stomach muscles helps in digestion but hydrocholoric acid also helps in the digestion of food.
