There are different types of animals around us. The large number of animals in the world can be broadly classified into two groups on the presence and absence of the backbone.

  1. Vertebrates (Animals with backbone) Some animals have backbone called vertebral column and a hard skeleton of a number of bones. Fish, frog, bird, lizard, snake, tiger, rabbit, whale, man, etc. The backbone is a part of the skeleton.
  2. Invertebrates (Animal without backbone) Some animals have no backbones. They have soft bodies because there is bony skeleton inside. Snail, an earthworm, a bee or a mosquito, etc. are invertebrates.
