The Great Bath is part of a large citadel complex that was found in the 1920s during excavations of Mohenjo-daro, one of the main centres of the Indus civilization. The bath is built of fine brickwork and measures 897 square feet (83 square metres). It is 8 feet (2.5 metres) lower than the surrounding pavement.

A very special tank , which archaeologists call the Great Bath , was built in Mohenjodaro . This was lined with bricks , coated with plaster , and made water tight with a layer of natural tar . There were steps leading down to it from two sides , while there were rooms on all sides . Water was probably brought in from a well and drained out after use . Perhaps important people took a dip in this tank on special occasions .
