The end that faces the north is called the north-seeking pole, or north pole, of the magnet. The other end is called the south pole. When two magnets are brought together, the opposite poles will attract one another, but the like poles will repel one another. This is similar to electric charges

When a thin strip of magnet is freely suspended, then it always orients themselves towards north south direction. Show the pole of a magnet which is towards north of the earth is called North seeking and on North pole. The pole towards south of the earth is called South seeking and or South pole of a magnet. The attraction or repulsion capacity at the poles is maximum of a magnet. North pole of a magnet is represented by writing 'N'. South pole of a magnet is represented by writing 'S'. North pole and South pole of a magnet cannot be isolated as it always exist in couple.
