As water is the most important resource for the survival of life. Earlier people used to eat fishes from the river, used river water for drinking, washing etc. Gradually as they started Agriculture they found it easier to grow crops near rivers as water for irrigation was easily available. Also, Agriculture made them stable as they were nomadic. So to take care of their crops ( from animals, birds, weather) they settled near rivers.
