Magnesium (Mg) has a '+2 oxidation' state. In order to balance the Oxygen (O2) in the reactant side of the reaction with the MgO in the product side, we have to add two more moles of MgO in the product side.

Valency of Magnesium -> +2 Valency of Oxygen -> -2 So +2-2=0 And as magnesium is having positive valency it will sit front then oxygen. So Mg²+ + O²- => MgO
