A physical change involves a change in physical properties. Examples of physical properties include melting, transition to a gas, change of strength, change of durability, changes to crystal form, textural change, shape, size, color, volume and density. In a physical change appearance or form changes, but substance remains same. Ice on melting converts to water. Water on evaporation converts to water vapor. All the products formed are still forms of water. Hence, this is a physical change.

Examples of Physical Changes

  • Crushing a can.
  • Melting an ice cube.
  • Boiling water.
  • Mixing sand and water.
  • Breaking a glass.
  • Dissolving sugar and water.
  • Shredding paper.
  • Chopping wood.
