The Sanchi stupa was built around 3rd century BC by Ashoka at Sanchi, about 60 km from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. The railings made of wood used in this structure were eventually replaced by stone railings during the Sunga period. The stupa has four gateways in each direction. Interestingly, the gateways have panels depicting the life events of Buddha and some Jataka stories. In these panels, Buddha is symbolised by peepal tree, lotus or a wheel. The pillars have capitals on their top which have sculptures of lions.
