Manganese is the mineral used to harden steel during manufacturing. It not only increases the hardening ability and the tensile strength but also decreases the critical cooling rate in the hardening process. This makes it the most efficient alloying element among all. The term hardened steel is often used for a medium or high carbon steel that has been given heat treatment and then quenching followed by tempering.
