Snake charming is so violent, in fact, that the Indian Wildlife Act of 1972 actually banned it. ... It points out that a country that has worshipped snakes throughout its history can't “honor” the reptiles with acts of cruelty. After the government passed the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, the nomadic communities that make up India's snake charmers have been struggling for survival. The law banned the ownership of snakes, punishing violators with hefty fines and up to seven years in prison.
