A soil profile is a vertical section through different layers of soil. Each layer has different texture, colour and chemical composition. These layers are termed horizons. The soil consists of three horizons: Horizon

A, Horizon B and Horizon C. The uppermost horizon (also known as topsoil) or A horizon is dark in colour because it is rich in humus and minerals. Humus makes the soil fertile. The next layer is B-horizon that has lesser amount of humus but more minerals. The third layer is C-horizon made of small lumps of rocks with cracks and crevices. The last layer is the bedrock which is hard and difficult to dig.
