Define x:
Let one part be x
The other part is 40 - x
Solve x:
1/4 x = 3/8 (40 - x)
1/4 x = 15 - 3/8 x
1/4 x + 3/8 x = 15
5/8 x = 15
x = 15 ÷ 5/8
x = 24
Find the two parts:
One part = x = 24
The other part = 40 - x = 40 - 24 = 16
Answer: One part is 24 and the other part is 16
