Levers can be used so that a small force can move a much bigger force. This is called mechanical advantage. In our bodies bones act as lever arms, joints act as pivots, and muscles provide the effort forces to move loads. There are four parts to a lever – lever arm, pivot, effort and load. There are three types of levers: first class, second class and third class. The difference between the three classes depends on where the force is, where the fulcrum is and where the load is.
