Panchayati Raj system °Village level - °Gram sabha - it is the foundation of Panchayati Raj. All adults (18+)are members of gram sabha. It elects the members of gram panchayat ( which looks after the administration of the village). °Gram panchayat - it is a elected body (elected by members of gram sabha) consisting of atleast minimum population of 750 (in a village) , villages having less population are grouped under common gram panchayat. Any member of gram sabha (21+) can contest election for membership of gram panchayat. Tenure of gram panchayat - 5 years. To preside over the meeting of gram panchayat a sarpanch is elected. Gram panchayat also has a secretary (government employee) whose job is to keep an account of income and expenditure. °Nyay panchayat - judicial wing of Panchayat which imposes fines but cannot send anyone to jail. °Block samiti - it is local self governing body that contains 100 villages. It consists of sarpanch of gram panchayat (1/5), elected members, members of Parliament, legislative assembly and council, B.d.o, s.d.m, and members of SCs, sts and obscs. In first meeting members of Panchayat samiti elects a chairperson called block pramukh. Tenure of Panchayat samiti is 5 years. °zila parishad- third and highest level of Panchayati Raj system.
