The dictionary definition of migratory bird is a bird that travels from one place to another at regular times often over long distances. Most native bird species (birds naturally occurring in the United States) belong to a protected family and are therefore protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Birds migrate to move from areas of low or decreasing resources to areas of high or increasing resources. The two primary resources being sought are food and nesting locations. At least 4,000 species of bird are regular migrants. That's about 40 per cent of the world's total. But some parts of the world have a higher proportion of migrants than others. In far northern regions, such as Canada or Scandinavia, most species migrate south to escape winter.
