The main role of iron in your body is to help your red blood cells function normally. Iron deficiency is common. Blood cell formation from differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells in red bone marrow. If these happen, the kidneys produce and release erythropoietin, a hormone that stimulates the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells.
