Trees growing on mountains have shapes to allow snow to slide off easily.

There are a large variety of plants and animals found in mountains having some common adaptations to survive in mountains.

The trees can survive in extremely cold and windy mountain habitats due to the following adaptations:

  1. The trees in mountain habitats are usually cone-shaped having sloping branches. This makes the rain water and snow to slide off easily without damaging the branches and leaves.
  2. They have small, needle-like leaves due to which they lose very little water during windy conditions as the water remains frozen in the form of ice and is not available to the roots of the plants.
  3. The needle-like leaves are covered with a thick waxy layer called cuticle to reduce the loss of water through transpiration.
  4. The broad-leaved trees shed their leaves before the onset of winter which prevents losing water from their leaves and helps in their survival when the water is frozen in soil and not available to the roots.
