  • The force with which an object is attracted towards the Earth is the weight (W) of the object. It is equal to the product of mass (m) and acceleration due to gravity (g).

W = mg

If we drop a stone from some height, it falls down towards the earth due to attraction between the earth and the stone. Such a force of attraction is called gravity. The earth attracts or pulls all the objects towards the centre. The force with which the earth pulls the objects towards it is called gravitational force of earth or gravity. Such a force of attraction or gravity is responsible for holding the atmosphere above the earth, rain falling on earth and flow of water in rivers.
