when four numbers say A,B,C,D are in similar quantities such that A:B= C:D then they are said to be in proportion.
when A,B,C are in continued proportion then B is said to be the mean proportional.
let us take A=9 and C=16 and B as X. then
A:X : : X:C
9:X : : X:16
{x}^{2} = 9 \times 16x2=9×16
{x}^{2} = 144x2=144
Therefore, x = 12.
So, the mean proportional of 9 and 16 is 12.
