Difference between work and energy

Work is the action done on object causing some displacement whereas energy is the ability to do work. If the applied force is in the same direction of the displacement than work is positive. If the applied force is on the opposite direction of the displacement that work is negative. However, energy has no direction component hence it is a scalar quantity.
