In ancient times, stone houses are built for a stronger fortress against natural calamities and from human invaders. In fact, the Knap of Howar is one of the oldest houses made of stone to exist since 3700 BC. Stones naturally take in and let out moisture, but excessive moisture can enter through failed mortar joints, exposure to cascading water due to a lack of effective gutters or sealants that do not allow normal water vapour to escape. Repointing work is done with mortar that is harder than the stones.
