During daylight hours, plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis, and at night only about half that carbon is then released through respiration. Plants take in CO2 during the day and release oxygen. In a process called “photosynthesis,” plants use the energy in sunlight to convert CO2 and water to sugar and oxygen. Photosynthesis uses carbon dioxide to make sugar and produces oxygen as a byproduct. Respiration uses oxygen to release energy from stored sugar and produces carbon dioxide as a byproduct. ... However, if the plants are growing, then over a period of 24 hours they will produce more oxygen than they consume.
