The Indian smelting industry declined in the 19th century because the colonial administration prevented the free movement of people in reserved forest, the smelters couldn't get charcoal. By the late 19th century iron and steel was being inported from Britain. This reduced the demand of iron and steel produced by local smelters. As the result, many of the local smelters migrated for looking some other work.

The reason why Indian iron smelting industry declined were the new forest laws. When the colonial government prevented people from entering the Reserve Forest, the iron smelters could not get wood for charcoal.
