Collector and District Majistrate is a single post. Collector historically means a Revenue Collector, who ,in addition to his his revenue functions, acted as a general coordinator of the district administration. As a district Majistrate, he exercised the judicial function. Today this function is reduced to powers under a few sections in the CrPC relating to law and order. The DM has also been assigned a significant role under the Indian Police Act of 1861. In the metropolitan cities there is no district Majistrate as these functions are delegated to the police Commissioner. There he is just a collector.
