There are three types of coal coal tar, coal gas, coke
1. Peat 2. Lignite 3. Bituminous 4. Anthracite
1. Peat - It is the first stage in the formation of coal and therefore it is light and brown in colour. It contains 50 to 60%of carbon 2 . lignite - It is the second stage in the formation of coal. It is also brown in colour and it contain more than 60% of carbon but it is harder than Peat. Bituminous - It is the third stage in the formation of coal. It contain approx 70 to 75%carbon. 3. Anthracite - It is the purest variety of coal. It is hard, dense, and black. It is difficult to ignite but once ignited it burns a lot of heat and for a very long time.
