The friction force depends on two factors: a) The materials that are in contact. The two materials and the nature of their surfaces. Pushing the surfaces together causes the more of the asperities to come together and increases the surface area in contact with each other. When there is relative motion between two surfaces, there is a resistance to the motion. The frictional force is equal to the frictional coefficient times the normal force. Friction is caused due to attractive forces between the molecules near the surfaces of the objects.
