    • people were  afraid of travelling long distances in one direction because 
    • they thought they might reach the end of the world where they might fall straight into hell 
    • or fall of something like a cliff 
    • or they may never return 
    • or  they may be attacked or held captive by some sort of creature
    • or probably it was because of religious rules where crossing the seas is like a taboo
    • or probably they were too scared to explore due to fear of their lives
    • and they didn't have good technology(lifeboats,ships,compass,maps)
    • and rumors about the sea scared them
