Following are the two important problems faced with the nij system of cultivation.
- Indigo could be cultivated only on fertile land. Because such areas were already densely populated, the planters had to acquire small plots scattered over large areas. This resulted in difficulty in the expansion of the area under nij cultivation. To counter this problem, the planters attempted leasing of the land around the indigo factory and evicting the peasants from the area. However, this always led to fierce conflict with the peasants.
- The labour required for the indigo factory was also very difficult to mobilize. A large plantation required a large labour force, and it was required at a time when peasants were usually busy with their own rice cultivation.
